Installing Ceramic Countertops

Ceramic counters are a great choice for any kitchen. They are affordable, beautiful, and easy to install. You have plenty of choices is tile size, patterns, colors, and styles. Just follow this guide and you’ll be on your way to installing your ceramic countertops.

Countertop Backing
1. You can lay your new tile over the old tile if you have to although it’s always better to remove the old tile if possible.
2. On a new install use plywood or backer board. Use exterior grade plywood so that the glue holds properly.
3. On an remodeling once you’ve removed the old tile you will want to scrape away the old adhesive so that you are starting with a smoother surface.

Tile Selection
1. The most important element is the edge and trim. When you order your tile you need to make sure your measurements account for the backsplash, sink caps, and quarter rounds.
2. Consider your room’s décor. What are you attempting to achieve? Once you answer these questions you can choose the right tiles.

Lay Out The Tile
1. To tile around the sink you need to start by finding the center of the sink. No sink? Then just mark the center of the counter. Do a test run to make sure everything fits right and lines up correctly.
2. Do a dry run around the sink as well and it really does pay to label the tiles after you’ve cut them.
3. Along the front of the counter use a full tile if possible or a minimum of a half tile.

Set The Tile
1. First set the edge pieces before you begin to spread the adhesive. Spread the adhesive on the back of the tile.
2. Use spacers if you need to.
3. Lay the sink trim next and remember to caulk between the plywood and the sink before you set the sink trim.
4. With quarter round tiles you will have to either use specially molded quarter round corners or miter the corners.
5. Now you can set the field tiles. Lay each row front to back starting at the center.
6. Finally you do the backsplash. Use a bull nose tile that is applied directly on the top of the back field tiles. Apply the adhesive to the back and caulk the joints.
7. Let the tiles setup completely and then grout.

That’s it! Your ceramic countertops are installed and ready to begin using. Doesn’t your kitchen look great? You should be proud of your accomplishments!
