Countertop Paint For Formica

If you are tired of that ugly counter color, can’t stand those scratches and stains anymore, then why not consider countertop paint?

Are you surprised? Many people aren’t aware that you can actually paint your countertop. So let’s get started.

1. Start by thoroughly scrubbing the counter with hot soapy water.
2. Then wipe the countertop with a rubbing alcohol or ammonia solution to lift any oil or grease. You may need to repeat this more than once.
3. Take 120 grit sandpaper and your orbital sander. Then sand the entire surface so that the surface gets scuffed up to help the paint stick. Be careful that you do not gouge the countertop.
4. If there are chips in the counter you will need to fill them using two part wood filler. Miniwax High Performance Wood Filler works very well. It sets quickly, it can be sanded, and most importantly it dries rock hard. It’s much like auto body filler for strength so don’t expect to be able to sand it by hand and do expect it to last forever.
5. Before you apply the paint you need to apply your primer. Have your primer tinted to the color of your paint.
6. Now it’s time to paint. You’ll have to decide on your color and then purchase an oil based paint and a short nap roller for applying.
7. Apply one thin coat and let dry.
8. Apply the second thin coat and let dry for at least 7 days before using.

Wow! Doesn’t that look great? Now remember this is in no way as strong as your original laminate so you might have to change some of your previous kitchen habits. No more cutting on the counter and no more dragging those pots across the surface.

Make sure you’ve purchased some extra paint in case you develop some scuffs or scratches. That way you can touch them up.

If you want stronger then forgo the alkyd oils and choose one of the professional two part paints that are designed to be sprayed. They are much more durable and do not need a primer. In fact you’ll get excellent durability and wear from the two part system.

Be sure not to use paint that has lead in it as there is potential that it could be transferred to food especially in a kitchen. Lead based products are not advisable under any circumstances.

You might consider applying a clear coat plastic sealer to either paint method but especially the acrylic paint. This will give the countertop a finish that’s virtually indestructible which is why plastic coat is so popular in a bar and restaurant atmosphere. And that high gloss shine looks great!

Sometimes replacing countertops is just not an option. Perhaps your budget is tight, maybe you’re just renting and don’t want to make the investment. It doesn’t matter, whatever the reason there is no need to put up with those ugly counters anymore. Countertop paint is a quick and easy solution. Why not try it?
