Are Glass Countertops Functional?

Your countertops play an integral role in your room’s décor. There are many different types of counters. Stone, slate, laminate, ceramic and a host of other choices. But what about glass countertops? Are they functional? Absolutely!

Back in 2003 glass was recognized at the Kitchen and Bath Shows as an up and coming material for countertops. Well that day has arrived.

Tempered glass countertops are not only functional they are extremely fashionable! They come in all shapes and sizes and the stainless brackets add an additional trendy look.

In the bath the easiest way to install glass counters is to install console tables which are available with sinks. A console table uses angle brackets to support the shelf against the wall and the legs are available in a host of different styles.

In the kitchen custom glass counters give a kitchen a very contemporary and trendy look especially if you combine it with one of the very modern cook tops and eye level ovens. Choose from a wide selection of sink styles designed to work with glass.

Glass also works great in a bar or entertainment area. Combine it with cherry or oak cabinets for a touch of elegance and use the glass to set a trendy style.

Glass has many characteristics that are beneficial:

1. Appearance
Glass has a natural green hue. Translucent colors are created by tinting the back of the glass and you can even have glass matched to your own specs if you like.

Your glass can be textured, sandblasted, etched, smooth, patterned, or grooved. You’ve got plenty of choices.

2. Sanitary
Because glass is non porous it won’t stain and bacteria can’t grow. You can place hot pots on it without damaging and it’s very easy to clean with any good household glass cleaner.

3. Durable
Tempered glass is pretty strong and can take a good deal of weight. It can easily handle 300 pounds sitting on it and it can handle a pot that’s 700 degrees without cracking. However dropping something on it can result in a crack or break which must be immediately cleaned up and replaced. Cracked glass is unsafe to continue to use.

4. Maintenance
Glass is easy to maintain and it always looks good. That said fingerprints can be a challenge to keep off and you need to take precautions so the glass doesn’t get scratched. Use glass cleaner and don’t use any abrasive cleaners.

Soft scrub can be used to remove mild scratches. Don’t let acidic substances stay on the glass or over time it will oyster on you.
5. Cost
It costs anywhere from $80 to $160 per square foot to have glass countertops installed. It depends on what type of glass, where you live, and a host of other factors.

There’s something about glass that’s hard to find in other materials. The lines are clean, it’s refreshing, and modernistic, and it’s just overall appealing. It makes it very easy to change your décor at anytime as it will simply morph taking on the new look and continuing to serve you.

So if the time has come to give your kitchen, bath, or bar a facelift consider glass countertops.
